6 principles of combining study and work
While learning in high school is a test of strength and ability to combine in life two very important things — study and work. And sometimes it seems that at the same time to cope with that, and the other is hardly possible.
We spoke with several current and former students about what helps to combine work with study. It turned out – if you observe a few simple principles, it can be quite easy.
1. Make priorities and plan
Define the priorities in work responsibilities — the most important work that will bring the greatest result and training homework — the most significant work of the semester, without which it is impossible to finish the course, as well as the most important small jobs, the deadline which has approached. Then make a list of priorities and determine the time required to perform each operation. A carefully drawn up plan (preferably in writing) creates a feeling of confidence that you can control the situation.
Classmates were always jealous of Liene Krivina, which during the study was completed and handed overwork on time. She advises: “Highlight in their daily lives a couple of hours that you will devote only to study. The main thing is to do it systematically and deliberately, and resist the temptation to postpone the time, provided for study on another day.”
2. Take into account infrastructure
As it is obvious as it sounds, to combine work, education and leisure will be easier if the place where you learn. Located not very far from where you make money. Distance is a relative thing, but still, you should try to choose the work in order to ensure that it can be reached by direct public transport, or road Cycling do not take the last effort (after all, after the trip, still need to work or study).
3. Continue with his work after practice
If you continue to work for a company where this was a summer internship, combine work and study will be easier. Of course, finding a place to practice is easier than staying there on a permanent basis, but many companies are open to young professionals. It is important that the results obtained during the practice experience will be assessed by the administration, and it will be easier to learn the processes of the company.
In addition, you don’t have to explain to the chief why in the morning you go to College, and from semester to semester you will be able to devote more time as the number of lectures will decrease gradually (of course, with the approach course and bachelor works don’t forget the first point in time and to sweep away the emphasis on the study).
4. Use your knowledge
Often even regardless of whether the studies and profession in which you work received in high school knowledge are better to apply in practice —you will be surprised to see how much specific theoretical knowledge can be used in any daily work. During the event, “Career ladder”, which suited the Bank SEB, in a similar example, shared Edgars-mate of Krists Neilands, Director of the company Labie Koki. He mastered the Bulduri horticultural College the profession of a gardener, and the resulting knowledge is integrated not only in work but also in further training at the faculty of history of culture.
5. Become himself an employer
Office work or any other place with a clear daily schedule is not the only way to earn a living and develop their career. Years of study suitable to start a business. Many young people this is a daunting prospect, but do not have to start with the construction of the plant or the IT giant. You can start in a business incubator (some are under the auspices of the universities). The main thing – the desire and willingness to be independent, a good idea and partner with a similar attitude.
Be honest and demanding of yourself
In those moments when it seems that leaned too much, remind yourself of why you actually started what you’re doing. “It is clear that it is impossible at once to obtain everything. Hard work and determination — that’s what allowed me, due to master knowledge, in 26 years to start a company and raise a daughter and on weekends to meet friends,” says Zane Zarina, which in the years of study she worked as a waitress. That did not stop her to finish the University of Latvia, being one of the best students on the course.
To comply with all these principles at once will be difficult, but you could start with one. When you successfully integrated it into your daily life, go for the next one. Laura Zvejniece, a student from the business school, with the first year of combined work with study. She said that in her view, are important only two things: “It’s better planning and understanding why I’m doing this. If I can answer these questions and devote enough time to planning work, it is a time for friends, family, and parties.” Now Laura continues to adhere to these principles while studying at the master’s level and simultaneously working full time.
6. Don’t forget to relax
Whatever accomplishments and ambitions nor drove us forward, every person needs rest. Outstanding American journalist Sydney j. Harris said that the time to relax is when you don’t have time for this. Each second of rest will help to look at things from a different point of view and will give new strength and inspiration to move on.
